Queue up your favorite reservation platform and get those digits ready to book: the inaugural edition of the Michelin Guide Miami is here. For the first time ever, the distinguished dining guide includes selections from Miami, Orlando and Tampa, with a total of 15 restaurants earning those much sought-after stars.
“This very first selection of the MICHELIN Guide in Florida highlights glittery Miami, storied Orlando and breathtaking Tampa, offering a unique blend of international cuisine and Florida flavors. Local foodies, as well as travelers, will enjoy exploring these mesmerizing and rich Florida culinary destinations,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides.
So, who in made the cut? Eleven restaurants in Miami, including the Florida guide’s only two-star establishment, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami in the Design District. Four restaurants in Orlando received one star and 29 restaurants throughout the state were worthy of a Bib Gourmand designation, essentially Michelin’s best value-for-money award. According to Michelin inspectors, these restaurants are where you can enjoy two courses with a glass of wine for under $49—a price point that’s practically unheard of these days. To our surprise, Michelin found 19 of these in Miami, seven in Orlando and three in Tampa.
The guide also bestowed two special awards: Sommelier of the Year, presented by Wine Access, to Victoria James and her team at Cote Miami; and the Exceptional Cocktails Award, which went to Ruben Rolon and his teams at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami and Le Jardinier Miami. On a personal note, you can find two of this year’s recipients at Time Out Market Miami: Stubborn Seed’s Jeremy Ford, which opened raw bar crew-do this week, and Phuc Yea’s Ani Meinhold and Cesar Zapata, the team behind longtime favorite Pho Mo.
For those not familiar with the Michelin Guide, here’s a quick primer on how the inspectors make their selections: One star is "high-quality cooking, worth a stop;" two stars indicate "excellent cuisine, worth a detour;" and the coveted three-star ranking marks "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey."
