Sugar Wood

Sugar Wood

It might be NSFW at Sugar Wood but this LGBTQ+ food space is ultimately a safe space. The new waffle-hawking spot on Prince Street specializes in penis- and vagina-shaped waffles to Soho, otherwise known as “not your mom’s waffles.” It launched with a soft opening in July with two menu items: “Kitty,” a vagina-shaped waffle, and “Woody,” a penis-shaped variety. You can choose to drizzle a choice of five sauces on your naughty waffles, including chocolate, strawberry, peanut butter, white chocolate, and caramel. The treats were dreamed up by CEO Austin Allan and queer celebrity baker and Magnolia Bakery executive Tom Smallwood, who have officially partnered up with The Phluid Phoundation.  Each month, Sugar Wood will donate at least $1,000 of its revenue to the Phluid Phoundation and its affiliated charities, including the Ali Forney Center and the Marsha P. Johnson Institute.  “We are queer and ally-founded company that seeks to bring some levity into the world during serious times,” Allan said in a statement. “At the same time, we have a mission to destigmatize sex and gender stereotypes through our products. Our penis and vagina waffles don’t reinforce a gender binary: They champion fun and self-expression at its expense.” While its mission is a serious one, the company’s staff is anything but, so go in expecting a good time. Sugar Wood plans on introducing ice cream and other treats to the menu at the end of summer 2022 and will soon have a selection of branded merchandi

Video: Watch dolphins play with kayakers in the Hudson River

While Rockaway Beach is dealing with its share of shark sightings, over in the Hudson River, boaters, kayakers and paddleboarders are being treated to magical dolphin sightings. A video of one such dolphin encounter that a kayaker in the Hudson recorded this week has gone viral. In the video, a dolphin is seen swimming alongside the kayaker and breaching the surface of the water nearby. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Habiba Hussain (@habibahussain_0906) The encounter happened on Sunday, when kayaker Habiba Hussain and her fellow boater spotted around three dolphins near West 125th Street around 1pm, according to W42ST.com. The dolphins stayed “playing” near the kayakers for about an hour until motor boats came through, the outlet says. “I still have a smile on my face,” she told W42ST.com. “I never thought I’d see a dolphin in New York City until we heard that some people had seen them earlier in the year.”  Hussain is right—there have been other sightings of the mammals this year, not only in the Hudson but in the East River and in New York Harbor. Cleaner waters, warmer waters due to climate change, and the return of menhaden to the river are all possible reasons why there have been more sightings, according to The New York Times. Maxine Montello, an official at the New York Marine Rescue Center, told the paper that there have been a “ton of sightings.” “It’s a glory to see stronger populations but also a worry because there’s increased overlap

This is a spotted lanternfly—if you see one in NYC, kill it immediately

Update: They’re back! Spotted Lanternflies have been…well, spotted all around the city this month and we’re still being encouraged to kill ’em. Read on to find out how. First, we were threatened by those horrifically named murder hornets. Then, we were grossed out by the multitude of carcasses left behind by those loud-AF Brood X cicadas. Now? Say hello to the spotted lanternfly. While its name sounds like it's a cute and harmless little bug, it can actually be very devastating to our ecosystem and agriculture here in the U.S. And now, having invaded Pennsylvania first in 2014, they've made their way to New York.  Here’s what to know about the spotted lanternfly. Where does the spotted lanternfly come from? Native to China, these little suckers (literally, they suck out plant juices) hopped aboard some shipment to Pennsylvania in 2014 and they’ve been making moves in the northeast ever since. 2020 was the first year they were spotted in NYC (in Staten Island, specifically) but now they’re being spotted everywhere across the boroughs—near the Barclays Center, in Prospect Park, in Central Park, on the High Line, on Randall’s Island and even in private home gardens. Polio has been found in NYC wastewater—here's what you need to know

Several weeks after a man in Rockland County, New York came down with polio, the virus has now been detected in NYC. On Friday, the NYC Health Department released a statement saying that it and the state’s health department have identified the polio virus in our sewage system, meaning it’s most likely being spread here. “For every one case of paralytic polio identified, hundreds more may be undetected,” State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett said. “The detection of poliovirus in wastewater samples in New York City is alarming, but not surprising. Already, the State Health Department—working with local and federal partners—is responding urgently, continuing case investigation and aggressively assessing spread.” The health departments are urging people to make sure they are vaccinated and to get their children vaccinated against the virus. Apparently, vaccinations among children in NYC have fallen since 2019, “putting us at risk for outbreaks and devastating complications of vaccine-preventable diseases,” they said in their joint press release. Only 86.2% of NYC children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years old have received three doses of the polio vaccine and nearly 14% aren’t fully protected. According to an NYC map, the neighborhoods with the lowest polio vaccination rates right now are Williamsburg, Battery Park City, Bed-Stuy and East Williamsburg, ranging from just 56% to 65%.

Graphic: courtesy of Angelic Diamonds 例えば最もロマンチックなレストランは「Gage & Tollner」「One if by Land, Two if by Sea」、最もロマンチックなスポットは、「Brooklyn Promenade」「Bow Bridge in Central Park」。 関連記事 『NYC is the best city in the world to find your soul mate(原文)』 『2022年、世界で最も安全で平和な国は?』

10 reasons New Yorkers feel lucky to live in NYC

10 reasons New Yorkers feel lucky to live in NYC

New York City has its share of problems that New Yorkers gripe about and outsiders dramatize, but it only takes spending time here to see how great of a city it is. On Reddit, a New Yorker asked their neighbors about what makes them feel lucky to live in NYC and hundreds chimed in with answers, from its unmatched diversity to simply being able to disappear into a crowd. RECOMMENDED: New York City is the city most people want to visit and live in Below are the 10 most common answers as to what makes people feel lucky to live in NYC. 1. We have to walk everywhere and it’s good for us New Yorkers walk more than any other American population and it shows. We walk miles a day to the subway, to work, back home and to get, well, anywhere. We’re regularly getting our steps in. Meanwhile, other cities and towns, where people rely more on cars can’t say the same. One week away from our beloved city and we find out very quickly that all our walking is actually a good thing.“My family makes fun of how much I like to walk and the fact that they always feel like they’re running when they’re walking with me but at least it keeps me in pretty good shape so who’s laughing now?” BroadBaker5101 writes. 2. Being able to see Broadway shows and music artists on a weekly basis Living in the cultural capital of the world (in our opinion) means being able to take advantage of all the talent that surrounds us. It’s not unusual for New Yorkers to catch a Broadway show often (especially when there are
