Best things to do during the Hungry Ghost Festival

Best things to do during the Hungry Ghost Festival

The Hungry Ghost Festival (also known to many as the Yu Lan Festival) isn't exactly the most popular festival to celebrate in Hong Kong, thanks to its terrifying name. Come the seventh lunar month every year, ashes and smoke fill the air as folks burn paper offerings on the streets to 'feed' the ghosts, giving the festival that extra creep factor that will make you think twice about staying out late during this time of year. But ghosts and ghouls aside, did you know this festival originated from a story of filial love? Though there are many variations of the festival's origin, the most well-known story tells the tale of Mulian, who attempts to save his deceased mother from becoming a hungry ghost due to her sins. Mulian seeks help from The Buddha, who told him to offer food and gifts to monks and monasteries on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month – thus, the Hungry Ghost Festival was born. Now that you know how the festival came about, it's not so scary, is it? If you're still not entirely convinced, consider participating in one of these cultural events below and get to learn more about the festival through experiences that are fun, fascinating, and just a tad spooky. RECOMMENDED: Just to be on the safe side, here are 8 things that you should never do during the Hungry Ghost Festival. Take notes, people.

Government launches city-wide programme to 'clean up' the city

Aiming to beautify the city, a government clean-up programme that will ramp up the cleaning of over 600 hygiene black spots across the city kicked off on August 14. Launched by the District Matters Co-ordination Task Force, the programme sees various departments join hands to tackle cleaning in the dirtiest parts of the city, educate the public and encourage community participation in keeping our streets clean, and step up law enforcement. According to Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho, the first phase of the operation from August to October will include increasing cleansing and disinfection work, stepping up inspection on hotspots, hiring specialists to perform pest and rodent control, and installing CCTV surveillance systems at garbage collection depots to combat illegal dumping of garbage in public housing estates. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department will be using new technologies such as pressure washer surface cleaners, leaf blowers, and mini-mechanical sweepers to enhance street cleaning. The government hopes that after the three-month programme, the public will see notable improvements in hygiene levels across urban areas in the city and that a new culture of keeping the environment clean can be nurtured. Authorities encourage the public to lodge complaints through the government hotline to reflect any hygiene concerns in specific areas. "To achieve sustained environmental improvements, collaboration between the community and the government is needed," says Tse

Don’t let Happy Cake Shop’s ghetto facade deter you, as this Hong Kong bakery has been putting smiles on local faces with all kinds of delicious bread and baked goods for 45 years in the Wan Chai neighbourhood. Sadly, that's all coming to an end this August as the shop's landlord decides to take back the premises. Check out Happy Cake Shop's baked offerings from the video below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out Hong Kong (@timeouthk)   Photograph: TA Photograph: TA Having been a Time Out Recommended venue for many years, Happy Cake Shop is most known for its nostalgic treats, such as the speciality cream cone – think of it as a hollowed-out croissant filled with cream – sa yung (deep-fried buns of golden goodness covered in sugar), red bean glutinous rice cakes, century egg pastry, and more. Their pineapple buns and egg tarts are also exceptional, and you definitely can't go wrong with any of the classics such as the egg salad baked rolls and coconut or peanut butter buns. Photograph: Iris Lo Photograph: Iris Lo As soon as the shop announced its closure, hoards of patrons lined up outside the bakery to get their hands on their favourite baked treats. If you would also like to get carb-happy and try some of the bakery's signature offerings, visit the bakery in Wan Chai (106 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai) on or before August 2, or head over to their second branch at Shop M-L023, Lee On Market, Ma On Shan. Ocean Park's beloved panda An An passes away at age 35

Ocean Park's beloved panda An An passes away at age 35

In a Facebook post announcement on Thursday, Ocean Park shared the heart-breaking news that the park's giant panda An An has passed away at the age of 35, which in human age is equivalent to 105 years old. As the world’s longest-living male giant panda under human care, An An's health slowly deteriorated over the past few weeks "with a severe decrease in physical activities and food intake." Photograph: Courtesy Ocean Park After consulting with the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda, veterinarians from Ocean Park and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department had come to the difficult decision to perform the procedure of humane euthanasia on An An. The centenarian panda passed away at around 8.40am inside his home in The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sichuan Treasures at Ocean Park.  A condolence book will be available outside An An's residence for guests to leave messages in loving memory of An An. Those unable to visit the park may do so by leaving a comment on the park's official Facebook announcement. Mido Cafe bids farewell for now to Yau Ma Tei neighbourhood

Mido Cafe bids farewell for now to Yau Ma Tei neighbourhood

After serving locals and tourists alike with their hearty cha chaan teng food for 72 years in Yau Ma Tei, Mido Cafe has recently stopped operations. Last weekend, the cafe posted an announcement on their front door, saying “It’s already been 72 years, so it’s time to relax and catch our breath. Remember, after today, there will always be tomorrow and decades to come. That’s it for now, see you next time. Goodbye, so long farewell, adieu, ciao, sayonara, adios. If fate favours us, we’ll definitely meet again…”. There is no official announcement yet if they are shutting down for good. The announcement posted on Mido's front door. | Photograph: Ann Chiu Mido Cafe temporarily closed during Hong Kong’s fifth pandemic wave. The cafe later reopened in May, so the halt in operations merely two months later came as a surprise. After the news broke, many took to the internet to have their say. While some expressed their dissatisfaction with Mido Cafe's decline in food quality and service in recent years, others reminisced on times when they visited to take snaps for Instagram. With its stained glass windows, ceiling fans, and authentic cha chaan teng dishes, Mido Cafe has been a landmark in the city. Although we’re not entirely sure when, if ever, it will open its doors again, it’s bittersweet to see this time capsule-like restaurant disappear so suddenly from Hong Kong’s dining scene.  Recommended stories:Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong returns this JulyAIA is giving away free rides on t
