The best luxury five-star hotels in Singapore

The best luxury five-star hotels in Singapore

Time and time again, Singapore is dubbed one of the richest cities in the world. Other than one of Singapore’s most iconic hotels, the city-state is home to numerous five-star hotels for the bougiest of travellers or loved-up locals planning a surprise staycation. Inspired by Kyoto teahouses, a new Japanese spot Sevens Kissaten has opened up in Tiong Bahru. Opened by real estate developer the Sevens Group, Sevens Kissaten boasts two concepts in one room. During the day, the space becomes a Japanese-style tearoom, and transforms into a Kappo-style omakase – called Sevens Kappo – at night.  While a traditional Kissaten is usually filled with antique furniture and looks arguably run-down, Sevens Kissaten, however, adopts a modern interior with a minimalistic look and wooden furniture pieces. Japanese lanterns are hung from the ceiling and the huge glass panels automatically brighten up the space.  Its Japanese-inspired menu will leave you hungry for more. Find a selection of dishes ranging from salmon angel hair pasta, unagi kabayaki, omurice and a wide range of Japanese brews including Melona manpaku and Ume-Ume. Delightful desserts include Matcha Monaka – Japanese rice crackers with matcha ice cream and red bean mochi crepe stuffed within, and matcha creme brulee.  The cafe closes at 5.30pm daily, and its five-seater bar counter will accommodate diners who have reserved their omakase menu. Sevens Kappo has two savoury omakase menus: a nine-course set for $238 and an add-on menu at $280.

Chicken Rice or Nasi Lemak? Fariz Jabba talks favourite food, hangout spots and why Geylang is the best

Chicken Rice or Nasi Lemak? Fariz Jabba talks favourite food, hangout spots and why Geylang is the best

This August, we are about celebrating all things local. With that, we have decided to spotlight individuals who have made their mark in Singapore and/or overseas.  Singaporean rapper Fariz Jabba is unlike most peers his age. This hip-hop star isn’t afraid to embrace his culture and he’s truly showing it in the music he makes – adding local humour and a dash of 'Malay-ness' in his bars. Some of his hits include Kalah and Ape Sia. We caught up with Fariz Jabba with his cultural roots, his favourite hangout spots, the inspiration behind his songs and whether he’s a fan of nasi lemak or chicken rice. What are some of the biggest highlights you’ve achieved in the years of becoming a rapper? Honestly, one of the craziest feelings is to be yelled back at by your own lyrics. It's really quite a trip. That's probably one of the first huge moments of my career. Plus, I got to meet my own heroes from all around the world, learning their ways and melding it into my psyche. I had several opportunities to spend time with great artists that taught me how to be a better creative. I've also had the chance to be featured on big platforms like NDP, representing my country and showing that it's possible for an average Malay kid like me to rise. I am grateful for everything.  Favourite hangout spots in Singapore, and why? Personally, I like the Haji Lane area but I try to find more obscure spots nowadays like Amoy Street or Chinatown. There are many hidden gems in Singapore still undiscovered. Li

Organised by Future Sound Asia, the team behind Malaysia’s premier music festival, Good Vibes Festival, is reintroducing the festival life back to the KL music scene with Good Vibes Weekender. Headlining the festival are Jackson Wang and CL, a K-Pop star who was once the leader of the successful girl group, 2NE1. Malaysia’s rapper Joe Flizzow and SonaOne are also part of the line-up. Other performers in the stellar line-up include singer-songwriter Pink Sweat$, alternative/indie singer-songwriter Beabadoobee and Snakehips. “Good Vibes Weekender is our newest brand under the Good Vibes banner. We’ve always wanted to create a festival for music lovers to share the good times here in the city, and with the restart of live events, we finally have a chance to do so! Good Vibes has always been ahead of the curve for music trends, and with more Asian acts making waves with a bigger audience, we would also like the inaugural Good Vibes Weekender to reflect that,” says  Wan Alman, Head of Entertainment at

Interview: Yung Raja on his upbringing and favourite eating spots you should patronise

Interview: Yung Raja on his upbringing and favourite eating spots you should patronise

It’s that time of the year again when dressing in anything red and white is de rigueur. The National Day Parade at the Marina Bay floating platform and all its frills might be over but the celebration. In the spirit of celebrating all things local, we have decided to spotlight individuals who have made their mark in Singapore and/or overseas.  Our first artiste needs no introduction. Singaporean-Indian rapper Yung Raja has made a mark on the global stage, a moment of pride for us all. With smashing hits like Mami, The Dance Song and Mad Blessings, Yung Raja manages to have fans reciting his songs like a chant as he raps in English and Tamil in this unique musical landscape. We caught up with Singapore’s home-bred artist about his upbringing, putting Singapore on the map while keeping in touch with his cultural roots, favourite food, and pretty much all things local. What are your fondest memories of Singapore thus far? I’d definitely say the little things. Growing up as a Singaporean and having the opportunity to witness my South Indian immigrant family enjoy life as a Singaporean… down to the food and the places we go. Seeing this city through their lens is truly a blessing because this is the life of their dreams.  How does it feel to be getting back out there performing after the pandemic-induced pause? It feels surreal. I'm reminded once again to never take this life for granted. Being on stage in front of people that came to see you... knowing the words to your songs. Wo

Details surrounding Kilo Lounge are being kept a secret for now, but stay tuned for updates. Party in Hell this August at Singapore's Hell on Earth, Haw Par Villa

Party in Hell this August at Singapore's Hell on Earth, Haw Par Villa

Are you ready to party in Hell? Unleash your inner devil on the dance floor this August 20 at Singapore’s hellish folklore theme park, Haw Par Villa. Outer Bounce, who identify themselves as neither a collective nor a crew of promoters, is the brainchild behind Outer Bounce 001 event. The team felt that there was “a need to re-express the vibrancy and the creative output in music that is rooted in Asia and its communities.” With that thought, they decided to enlist their debut shindig at Haw Par Villa – an eccentric place full of curiosity and otherworldliness packed with statues and dioramas showing scenes from Chinese folklore. This unconventional yet fresh location is different from past raves, which is something Outer Bounce takes a lot of pride in. On the decks this August 20 is Thailand’s Sunju Hargun – known for his eclectic blend of experimental electronica and techno, and Yoshi Nori of 禁 JIN, who bases most of his activities in Taiwan and Japan. Singapore’s very own Yadin Moha is also part of the lineup.   Why Har Par Villa you ask? Ever since COVID-19 hit the city, it forces Outer Bounce to reconsider how to utilise and readapt spaces. With that in mind, the team together with Haw Par Villa believes in creating new experiences and changing the way society perceives space and sound. Additionally, it is a clever way of educating partymongers on the heritage as well. Outer Bounds 001 takes place on August 20 at Haw Par Villa, Rise of Asia Museum (ROAM). Can’t believe

Singapore Night Festival returns this August – here are key installations to look forward to

The Singapore Night Festival will illuminate the streets next month, after a two-year hiatus. Held in the Bras Basah-Bugis precinct, the festival will run from August 19 to 27. Titled Rebirth, the 13th edition of the programme is set to feature over 55 programmes, with a focus on the heritage and character of the precinct. Highlights include six projection mapping installations and 14 night lights installations. Performances and experiential events will also be part of the lineup. A temporary set, Cathay Hotel: The Curse of the Missing Red Shoe, produced by local arts collective Vertical Submarine will be erected in Cathay Green – a patch opposite The Cathay. It will feature characters from Cathay films from a bygone era such as Mat Bond, and Mambo Girl, allowing audiences to experience these old characters in a contemporary setting.  The festival also serves as a platform for local artists to co-create and showcase their best works and performances. Artist Amanda Tan will have her work projected on the Stanford Court clock tower. Titled Glitches of You, it explores a multicultural and modern identity. Expect to see more installations this year as the festival grounds will be expanded to Fort Canning Park as well. Highlights of the festival Cathay Hotel: The Curse of the

Nightlife as we know it isn’t going to be the same. What will clubs look like after Covid-19? And, most importantly, will they be safe?
