Sailor Moon fans have something to be excited for as a special Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon exhibition has finally opened in Tokyo. Though called the Sailor Moon Museum, the temporary exhibition will only run from July 1 to December 30 at the Roppongi Museum. It is just one of the many events being held to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the first Sailor Moon manga by Naoko Takeuchi.
The museum opens with an immersive multimedia theatre, where you can watch a video featuring the Sailor Guardians. There are also displays featuring some of their magical wands.
There’s also a gorgeous holographic story display illustrating the 30-year-long history of Sailor Moon.
Another room is dedicated to original drawings as well as clips and shots of famous scenes from each of the Sailor Moon movies.
One of the most dazzling spaces is the Sailor Crystal Gallery, decked out with strings of glimmering crystals. In this room you'll find original paintings and artworks by Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon.
An impressive collection of more than 600 Sailor Moon items are also on display. There are figurines, game consoles and even costumes from Sailor Moon stage musicals.
In terms of the sheer number of items on display, this is the largest Sailor Moon exhibition ever in Japan.
The museum also features an additional rotating exhibition of original drawings and content from different parts of the Sailor Moon series. Here's the schedule:
July 1-September 4: The first instalment will exhibit original drawings from the first and second seasons of the series.
September 10-November 6: The second block will display original drawings from the third and fourth seasons.
November 12-December 30: The final instalment will feature drawings and content from Sailor Moon's fifth season and onwards.
You can book tickets in advance online (in Japanese only). Same-day tickets are also available through the same link. Advance tickets go for ¥2,000 (middle and high school students ¥1,200, elementary school students ¥600), while same-day tickets cost ¥2,200 (¥1,400, ¥800).
To extend your stay in the Sailor Moon world, you might want to drop by the Sailor Moon café before leaving the museum. Or go pick up exclusive merchandise at the museum gift shop.
The café menu includes dishes like omelette rice with an image of Sailor Moon, a rainbow parfait, and Sailor Moon sliders. There's even a bubble tea truck outside the museum, where you can pick up refreshing drinks inspired by the Sailor Guardians.
