The fifth-generation Peak Tram, a classic 1989 burgundy tramcar, announced its retirement in June 2021. Now, a little more than a year later, the sixth-generation Peak Tram is set to make its public debut on August 27, returning as one of the city’s long-standing icons.

The $799 million revamp project carried out by Peak Tramways sees the addition of new tramcars, haulage and control systems, new rope and track rails, as well as refurbishments to the Central and Peak termini to provide a more enjoyable, efficient, and comfortable experience for visitors. At the Central Terminus, which has been extended to provide covered, temperature-controlled waiting areas for up to 1,300 people, visitors will be introduced to five engaging zones: Eye of Infinity, The Beating Heart, An Icon is Born, Once Upon a Tram, and Go Wild at The Peak. Meanwhile, the Peak Terminus will present to visitors a new and informative audio-visual display. These redevelopments are said to reduce waiting times by over 70 percent.

With a brand new look, the new trams are dressed in a bespoke 'Peak Tram Green' colour, which calls on the Peak Tram's historic third and fourth-generation tramcars that served from 1948 to 1959 and 1959 to 1989 respectively. The new model is made in Switzerland by international manufacturers Garaventa, CWA, and Frey. Aside from wider doors and step-free access for persons with disabilities, the new tramcars have also increased their maximum capacity from 120 passengers to 210. There will also be larger windows on the tram for visitors to fully soak in the panoramic views of the Hong Kong skyline.

To show their gratitude to Hongkongers for being patient during the tramcars’ swanky upgrades, Peak Tramways is launching a series of opening ticket promotions such as flash online deals and the Thank You HK Pass. Click here to find out more about the promotions.
