Bangkok finally gets to meet this trendy hotel brand. The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, which makes its home in the city at King Power Mahanakhon in the bustling commercial business district of Sathorn, has unlocked its doors, allowing guests to experience a luxurious stay but without the high-nosed pretentiousness sometimes felt in other high-end establishments.
The hotel takes over the first 18 floors of the city’s iconic pixelated skyscraper. Spanish artist-slash-designer Jaime Hayon was recruited to dress up the hotel in quirky retro-inspired aesthetics that focus on muted tones and geometric shapes–nods to the brand’s funky essence.
There are eight room types on offer, including the lead-in Standard King, the spacious Suite Spot and the lavish Penthouse. Each room features bright colors, curved elements and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Bangkok’s concrete jungle. Rendering the experience better than the standard are state-of-the-art technology such as automatic curtains and lighting systems.
Food-wise, The Standard also aims to impress. You have Ojo Bangkok, which serves elevated Mexican fare; the award-winning Cantonese restaurant Mott 32, which had its start in Hong Kong; and all-day dining restaurant The Standard Grill.
More fun can be had at The Parlor, where you can have coffee or cocktails—or both—and Tease, which serves afternoon tea. These social hubs also host special events like Not Your Standard Bingo and drag brunch.
Health freaks can be persuaded to spend some hours and break a sweat at The Standard Gym, the sole spot in Thailand to have CLMBR machines. The gym is available for one-day use or annual memberships.
The Standard also has a dedicated co-working space for business meetings and after-parties. A line-up of events will also keep the outdoor pool and rooftop bar Sky Beach busy and bustling.
