If we could write the rules of living in Los Angeles this would be our No. 1, always at the top of our list: When you live in this city, there’s no excuse for boredom just because it’s a weeknight. There are hundreds of things to do in Los Angeles each week, whether you hit the beach at sunset or go for a morning bike ride, or catch a concert or a comedy show—and that’s really only scratching the surface. Well, we don’t make the rules, but we will provide you with plenty of ideas for your next free weeknight right here. Now go out (or, in a few cases, stay in) and tackle these things to do in L.A. this week.

Famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s first California design has been closed since the start of the pandemic, but the Hollyhock House is finally reopening for tours—and with a free lawn party to celebrate. Self-guided tours resume on August 18 (Thu–Sat 11am–4pm; $7), but Barnsdall Art Park is throwing a proper party on August 20 (4–8pm) with free performances from the Bob Baker Marionette Theater (5, 6:30pm), music, crafts and—thanks to FORT:LA—100 free hot dogs on a first-come, first-served basis.

Young comics Max Silvestri, Jenny Slate and Gabe Liedman began inviting their friends and favorite comics to a weekly show at a record store in Brooklyn in 2008. The crackling aura surrounding Father John Misty extends beyond his past life as a Fleet Foxes member under his given name, J. Tillman. As a solo artist, his 2012 Sub Pop debut, Fear Fun, featured soaring, soulful folk-rock spiked with energy and cleverness, notably uniquely L.A. single “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings.” Since then, he’s released a bunch of lauded albums, stolen a crystal from Moon Juice and produced some choice pull quotes.

With live local bands, beer gardens, cocktail lounges, a full bar, gourmet food trucks, a slew of vendors, face painting and more, you might want to start reserving third Fridays in your calendar.
