When you think about it, caves are actually pretty sensible places to live. Naturally warm in winter and cool in summer, they’re also, obvs, very environmentally-friendly. In fact, in Spain there are thousands of people that still live in caves: they’re called trogladitas and some of their cave-homes are very, very fancy indeed.
If you’ve ever wanted to go back to your caveperson roots, well, here’s your chance. An Airbnb called the ‘Cuevas Almagruz’ offers guests the opportunity to live the trogladita life and stay in massive, ancient cave in the village of Purullena in Granada, southern Spain.
Before you get any ideas, no, this isn’t any old wet, drippy cave. Oh no. Kitted-out with characterful furnishings, swish lounge areas and even an enormous outdoor pool, there’s a significant amount of luxury in the Almagruz.
Forget campfire cooking, rocks for pillows and social isolation, too: this place has a fully-equipped kitchen, beds with swanky linen and even Wi-Fi. Here are a few more pictures of the place.
What’s more is that the Almagruz is much more than just a series of lush caves. Boasting its own on-site museum, it’s also a great place to learn about the local area’s cave-dwelling history. Just half an hour’s drive from the city of Granada, it’s also within easy reach of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Thanks to its location in a valley, Purullena itself is a stargazing hotspot.
