Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art
Mitchelton’s gallery of Aboriginal art displays the work of some of the most prolific Indigenous artists currently working today. Works on display are often on loan (and on sale) from 15 different art centres and communities across Australia, including the local Taungurung community. This cavernous underground gallery space houses a huge selection of beautifully curated art, from the prolific Possum family, to artists like Jeannie Mills Pwerle and Yannima Tommy Watson. Prices range from the hundreds through to the hundred-thousands, such is the diverse selection and sizes of art on offer. Enter through the lift at the bottom of the famed lookout tower and choose the gallery floor, and you'll descend into the airy, spacious exhibition level. A store at the back houses even more art, stacked in loving piles awaiting a spare opening on the gallery walls. The centrepiece of the gallery is the "Message Stick Vehicle", a transformed Vietnam War Ambulance that was painted by over 200 Aboriginal artists over several decades. See if you can spot a painted hand from South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela himself. It’s a must-see.

This visual spectacular and cultural event debuted in Bendigo back in 2018 with over 60,000 attendees passing through the festival. The 2022 iteration comes to Bendigo on Saturday, September 3. Ovolo South Yarra
Situated on Toorak Road, just around the corner from the infamous party strip, Ovolo’s South Yarra outpost is perfectly suited to its Chapel Street adjacent location. No detail has been overlooked in accomplishing the hotel’s groovy, 1960s-70s aesthetic. Before you’ve even entered the elevator you’re greeted with a circular neon fire pit and lava lamps – make note of their vegan restaurant Lona Misa on your way to check in, as it’s here that you can grab a plant-based breakfast, lunch or dinner while staying at the hotel. When we stayed we found the "groovy" room compact but comfortable and stylish – exactly what you’re after if you’re looking to hit up the nearby Chapel Street for either boutiques or clubs. (You can also opt for either the “go-go” or “boogie” room.) Muted jewel-toned geometric patterns adorn the walls of the suite, while modern industrial metal finishes are softened by velvet furnishings. During August, you can also book into a special 'Wellness Package' – a luxury room offering designed to help you feel relaxed, refreshed, and rejuvenated. It includes a bunch of goodies, including an exclusive 'Sleep Deep' pack from The Body Shop, special T2 Sleep tea, and sleep tips designed to help you have a dreamy stay. It mirrors what is often the biggest drawcard for guests at any Ovolo – the generosity of freebies, such as the mini bar. Each room comes with a complimentary selection of snacks plus booze, including a selection of local beers and wines, and soft drinks
Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner
Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner was previously scheduled at Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre from July 27 to August 21. A new season has been set for January 18-29, 2023. Following its Australian premiere at Sydney's Darlinghurst Theatre Company in autumn 2021, Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner is finally winging its way to Melbourne in summer 2023. And with a rave reviews (including a phenomenal, five-star rating by Time Out Sydney) you bet we're excited. British playwright Jasmine Lee-Jones's exciting work draws on the social media vortex, deploying GIFs, memes and emojis to consider questions of cultural appropriation, racism, homophobia and online trolling. It all spirals out of an online argument about the success of 23-year-old “self-made billionaire” and reality TV star Kylie Jenner, that sets best friends Cleo and Kara against one another. A collaboration with Green Door Theatre Company, the show stars the inimitable Moreblessing Maturure and Iolanthe, as co-directed by proud Bardi and Jabirr Jabirr woman Shari Sebbens, and actress and musician Zindzi Okenyo. “Jasmine Lee-Jones has written one of the greatest debut plays I will ever have the privilege of reading, turning even the simple act of page formatting into a thrill,” Sebbens says. “The voices of Cleo and Kara bust through the atmosphere of a global shift every one of us should be feeling right now, bringing big pain and big heart. They crack open the URL, the IRL and force us to look at the space we h

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Although sometimes overshadowed by that other Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice sung-through Biblical musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been beloved by musical theatre fans the world over since its first West End production in 1973. It tells the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis, who gets sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers and works his way up to become the Pharaoh's right-hand man. The show's famous songs, including 'Any Dream Will Do' and 'Go Go Go Joseph', are earworms that will stay with audiences long after final bows. Joseph will open in Melbourne in November, which will be the first staging of this newly reimagined production outside of the UK. Euan Fistrovic Doidge will be stepping into the shoes (or rather, the colourful coat) of Joseph. After grabbing attention in the national tour of Cruel Intentions: the ’90s Musical, Doidge is well known to Australian audiences having starred as Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever, Felicia in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and as Marius in Les Misérables. Fijian-born songstress Paulini needs no introduction to anyone who saw her soar to the final four in the first season of Australian Idol and top the charts with both her solo career and time with pop group the Young Divas. She has proven herself a powerful presence in musical theatre too, starring in The Bodyguard Musical, Saturday Night Fever, the 50th Anniversary of Hair the Musical. She will star as the Narrator in Joseph. It's been

Zero stars: is this the worst hotel in Switzerland?
Star ratings aren’t everything when it comes to hotels. Just ask the brains behind Null Stern Hotel, who proudly advertise their no-star status (the name of the hotel translates from German to English as ‘zero stars’) and charge several hundred Swiss francs for the privilege. They’re also doing a roaring trade, despite one of the ‘rooms’ boasting no ceilings or walls and sitting directly next to the forecourt of a petrol station. No, really. ‘The only star is you’ is their brutally honest tagline. Why is all this happening? Because Null Stern is actually a cool, creative and – sometimes – fairly comfortable mashup of art installation and hotel. And everyone seems to want a piece of it. One of the teams behind the project is Zero Real Estate, who made headlines a few years back (including one of our own) with their open-air hotel concept. Now, ZRE have relaunched and gone one step further, transporting their bare-bones hotel room setup from idyllic Swiss countryside hideaways to spots like the aforementioned petrol station. The idea is to stop people from sleeping (or at least sleeping soundly) and instead force them to contemplate some of the world’s problems – presumably including climate change, considering the setting. If that all sounds too extreme and conceptual, Null Stern Hotel still offers ‘suites’ in the beautiful, rural locales that made their name, giving guests the chance to get back to nature from the ‘comfort’ of a partially constructed hotel room. To be fair, y

Gear up for world-class cycling action this summer as the Tour de France hits Lausanne
Prepare for a summer of cycling in Lausanne this year, as the world’s most famous cycle race lands in the city during July, with various activities organised around the race to encourage residents to hop onto two wheels themselves. But before you head out on your own pedal-powered road trip, make sure you catch a glimpse of the Tour de France drama, which arrives in Lausanne on July 9. After setting out from Dole in the French Jura Mountains, riders will head into the city and grapple with a gruelling nine kilometres of hills. This means climbing the Avenue d’Ouchy, crossing Place Saint-François and Pont Chauderon, and then attacking the wince-inducing 12% incline of Avenue de Beaulieu. Having given those thigh muscles a solid workout, riders then finish in front of the Pontaise Olympic Stadium – a suitably grand setting after the test they’ve just endured. There’ll also be further world-class cycling during October, when the inaugural edition of the women’s Tour de Romandie competition takes place as a circuit race in Lausanne, as part of the UCI Women’s World Tour. For anyone wanting to hit the road themselves after seeing how the pros do it, Lausanne is the place to be. Choose from scenic countryside jaunts that invite leisurely riding, cycle routes that include stops at gorgeous vineyards or perhaps even a winding mountain climb if you’re feeling ambitious – and very fit. So, whether you’re an experienced rider looking for the next challenge or still learning how to balan
“We look like ants!”: Anne Hathaway and Roger Federer take a Grand Tour in a new Swiss tourism video
Switzerland is beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that its beauty far, far outshines one of the greatest tennis players of all time parkouring over a glacier with an Oscar-winning, globally renowned actor. This is the clear message of the latest Switzerland Tourism campaign. The video features Switzerland’s own tennis hero Roger Federer teaming up with multi-award winning film star Anne Hathaway, who – in a fictitious storyline, it should be stated – embark on a road trip covering the Grand Tour of Switzerland, to make a promotional tourism video. The Grand Tour is a 1,643-kilometre route that shows off some of the country’s most incredible sights and scenery. As a result, Roger and Anne undertake all kinds of epic adventures – hopping over glaciers, synchronised swimming through icy glacial waters – only to find they barely feature in the final cut of the new commercial, which instead focuses purely on the gorgeousness of Switzerland. Poor Roger and Anne “look like ants” in the finished version, as Anne points out, with the director choosing to max-out on glistening lakes, towering mountains and sweeping meadows, rather than the two A-list celebs. Surprisingly, the mega-famous pairing aren’t too happy at being thrown to the cutting room floor, and they thrash it out with the director and his editing team, to no avail. One of the team even commends Roger’s “amazing abs” on display in a swimming scene – after mercilessly editing them out, that is. Spoiler alert: no abs, amazing
Nuclear bunkers become a talking point in Switzerland again
One thing that the last few years have taught us is that we live in strange and unpredictable times, further proof of which comes from the discovery that nuclear bunkers are now very much an acceptable conversation topic in Switzerland once again. Switzerland famously built nuclear bunkers during the Cold War, to protect citizens from the potential threat of nuclear weapons being used. Now that international tensions have mounted again with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, coupled with increased murmurings about nuclear activity, those same bunkers are back on the agenda. It’s not known exactly how many bunkers were built, but the total number is thought to run into tens of thousands. Currently, most bunkers are derelict or disused (or used for less-terrifying purposes than avoiding nuclear conflict, like storage), but it’s believed many of the shelters could easily be used for protection again if needed. Add to this the fact that Swiss law requires local municipalities to provide a form of nuclear shelter for all of its residents, and it’s not too difficult to see why there’s suddenly renewed interest in these spooky spaces. One of the most well-known of these is Lucerne’s Sonnenberg Tunnel. Nowadays used simply as part of a motorway, the tunnel was the world’s largest civilian nuclear shelter when it was built in the 1970s, with enough room for 20,000 people. Get a glimpse into some of Switzerland’s strangest bunkers through a collection of photos that peer into these eeri
Switzerland has been voted the fourth happiest country in the world
It may be painfully expensive to buy a beer at times and it may get cold – like really cold – in the winter, but none of that matters when it comes to true happiness in Switzerland, as the country has been ranked as one of the happiest places to live on the planet yet again. The ranking appears in the annual World Happiness Report published by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network. For the fifth year in a row, Finland topped the table, followed by Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland, with the Netherlands in fifth place. Clearly, the Nordic countries are the place to be if you want to boost your happiness. Although impressive, Switzerland’s position at number four is one spot lower than the previous World Happiness Report rankings in 2021, which placed the country third in the table. The United Kingdom ended up a lot lower down the rankings in 17th place, one spot below the United States in 16th. The report uses data from the Gallup World Poll and assesses a range of factors to measure happiness, including life expectancy, gross domestic product, social support and freedom to make life choices. It should also be noted that the data was collected before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. If you’re looking for ways to celebrate Switzerland’s pretty-darn-happy status, take a look at our recommendations for the best things to do around the country, which includes lots of tips for making the most of Switzerland’s magnificent outdoors.
